Muhammad Shamim Khan (OBE FRCS (Urol) FEBU) is a Professor of Urology and Surgical Education at King’s College and Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital London. His principal clinical interest is management of bladder cancer. He is leading bladder cancer management programme at the Guy’s Hospital with a highly dedicated team of colleagues providing tertiary care centre for management of bladder cancer (South London Cancer Network) offering full range of diagnostic (including photodynamic diagnosis) and therapeutic options for non-muscle invasive cancer and robotic and open radical cystectomy and all types of urinary diversions for muscle invasive disease.
The robotic cystectomy programme at Guy’s Hospital is the first of its kind in UK and Europe and the team has national and international recognition for its pioneering work. Professor Khan carries out one of the highest numbers of this procedure in the country, and has helped establish the robotic cystectomy programme both nationally and internationally. He is a major contributor of the data to the national and international audits of the outcomes of robotic assisted radical cystectomy.
Professor Khan has been the Director Office of Education, the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) from 2013-2016, member Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in Urology, Joint Committee of Higher Surgical Training (JCHST), BAUS Executive Committee for Oncology, Standard Setting Panel Intercollegiate Board in Urology, examiner FRCS (Urology) and lead in undergraduate urology King’s College London. Professor Khan is leading the robotic surgical training consortium sponsored by the Urology Foundation (TUF), Director Education for the Vettikutti Institute of Robotics King’s College, co-lead for the surgical BSc at the King’s College London, regional (South East) and national simulation programme in urology (SIMULATE) and examiner FRCS Urology International.
He is heavily involved in teaching and training locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and has made an enormous contribution in promoting minimally invasive, reconstructive and transplant surgery in 8 high volume centres in Pakistan and one in Africa.
He has authored over 500 publications (230 papers and 300 abstracts) edited two books, contributed 10 book chapters. He was awarded Storz Silver Cystoscope award for the best trainer in UK & Ireland in 2017 and the Order of British Empire (OBE) in 2007 for humanitarian work.
