Emma Waring

Emma Waring qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1992 as a registered general nurse and went on to specialise in cardiac nursing. In 2001 she obtained a degree in critical care nursing from Kings College and moved into a specialist nurse role at Guys and St Thomas’ setting up a clinic to specifically treat erectile dysfunction in cardiac patients. This was done in collaboration with the late Dr Graham Jackson, Consultant Cardiologist and because of the unique nature of the clinic they presented their work nationally and internationally.

In 2004 Emma obtained a post graduate diploma in psychosexual therapy at the University of Central Lancashire and in addition to her nursing role she began working as a sex and relationship therapist at Guy’s hospital in the Sex and Relationship clinic.

Emma’s unique role was recognised when she won the Nursing Times rising star award in 2004.

In October 2011 Emma joined the London Bridge Hospital as a psychosexual Specialist Nurse and has set up a Psychosexual therapy service for patients/couples experiencing sexual difficulties and/or relationship problems.

Emma is the final stages of completing a 3 year diploma in course in Transactual Analysis Counselling. This is proving to be really helpful in enabling Emma to work more broadly with some of her clients and look as issues that may not be directly affecting that individuals sex life but their life more generally. These include issues such as anxiety, depression, fear of intimacy, patterns of behaviour that the person recognises is holding them back in their relationships with others or their life more generally.

Emma continues to present at GP seminars on the subject of sexual difficulties and talks regularly on how to keep sex alive in a committed relationship through the Marriage Course and Marriage Preparation Course.

Emma is in the process of completing a book which focuses on how couples can nurture sexual intimacy and manage sexual problems in committed relationships and she hopes this will be published later this year.
